Preparations in Full Swing: The Canoe Slalom World Cup in Prague – Troja Starts in Just One Month

vodni slalomThe post-Olympic season holds special significance for Czech canoe slalom athletes. The stars of the sport are eager to taste victory once again – and what better place to do so than in front of a home crowd? In just a month, the most popular race of the slalom season will begin – the Canoe Slalom World Cup in Prague – Troja (June 27–29). For Jiří Rohan, double silver Olympic medalist and director of the organizing committee, preparing for the event may be a routine task, but the emotions, desire to please the fans, and the outstanding performances of Czech athletes remain as strong as ever.

Years of Experience, But Still Full of Surprises

rohanJiří Rohan has been part of the organizing team since 1999. Although he has been involved in dozens of major events, each season brings new challenges. “Last year we were surprised by high water levels, which led to changes in the program and safety measures. The feelings are always the same though – first, the tension of preparation, then the anticipation, and finally the emotions depending on the results,” says Rohan, whose son Lukáš, an Olympic medalist, is also involved this year as part of the media team.

“The greatest reward for me is always when our local athletes succeed and the audience enjoys the event. That’s what keeps me going,” he adds, expressing hope that a large turnout in Troja will also recognize the organizing team’s year-round efforts.

Changes in TV Broadcast Production

With a month to go, the key preparations are complete and final details are being worked out. “The biggest novelty this year is a change in the television broadcast production, now handled by the Latvian company Two Circles, based in Riga. They’ve been commissioned by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and will cover both slalom and flatwater events,” explains Rohan.

“The major change is that there won’t be an on-site production truck. Instead, raw footage will be transmitted to Riga, where the international broadcast will be produced. For us, this means ensuring a very fast and stable internet connection,” he adds.

Czechs Riding a Wave of Success

prskavecFresh European champion in K1 Jiří Prskavec and silver medalist Gabriela Satková recently showed great form in Paris. Other homegrown talents also preparing to fight for medals in Troja include kayak cross European champion Jakub Krejčí and European bronze medalist Olga Samková. Support from local fans has always played a crucial role, and organizers believe this year will again see enthusiastic crowds of all generations.

“World Cup races are not only a top-tier sporting event, but also a great way for fans and sport-oriented families to enjoy quality time outdoors, by the water, in a friendly atmosphere, and to create lifelong memories,” says Jiří Rohan – director, athlete, and coach in one person.
